After a scoreless game and two scoreless overtime periods, the 1999 Finals against China went to penalty kicks. Carla Overbeck, Joy Fawcett, Kristine Lilly and Mia Hamm had already made their penalties and Briana Scurry had saved Liu Ying's penalty. That meant that if Brandi Chastain could hit hers, the US would win the World Cup. Chastain calmly set the ball, ran up and sunk it into the upper right corner of the net. Her celebratory shirt removal after winning the World Cup will go do down as the most iconic moment in Women's football and perhaps all World Cup history.
